About This Readme

This document contains important information about the Wonderware® MES 2014 software. This Readme documents the system requirements, known issues, resolved issues, and changes, if any, to the Wonderware MES software documentation included on this CD.

About This Release - Wonderware MES 2014

 

Wonderware MES 2014 includes the following new features and enhancements.

Wonderware MES Web Portal

The Wonderware MES Web Portal component has been added to the Wonderware MES software. The MES Web Portal supports only SQL Server as the database engine.

Wonderware MES Web Portal is a web-based application that provides a user interface to configure and monitor your plant model and production processes. The Wonderware MES Web Portal gives you the ability to configure production lines, work orders, entities, and utilization states and reasons. It also provides an interface for manually recording downtime events, production transactions, and work order/job status changes.

The focus of this release of MES Web Portal was to provide a modern, browser-based user interface for the MES Performance module. Note that this offering has not been optimized for touch interfaces and was designed to be used in landscape orientation. However, future releases will include investments that will maximize the touch experience for end-users who will be utilizing computing devices that vary in shape and size, and in portrait orientation.

To install Wonderware MES Web Portal, you have to:

  1. Install the MES Web Portal component during the MES installation procedure.
  2. Run the MES Web Portal Configurator utility to create the Web Portal server in Internet Information Services (IIS) and create the required directories and files on the server machine.

Note: If Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 is not installed, the Wonderware installation process will attempt to install it if the MES Web Portal component has been selected for installation. The .NET Framework installation can take several minutes, during which the Windows hourglass icon will be displayed.

Line Management

Within the Wonderware MES Web Portal, production lines can be defined. A production line defines the flow of material through entities (supporting both serial and parallel flow) without the need for defining processes.

A new method has been added for creating a work order from the line. This method creates jobs for all the entities on the line. Also, the system will be able to detect and report on the production bottleneck for the line.

Utilization States and Reasons Enhancements

Utilization state definitions and utilization reason definitions have been enhanced to include:

  • Minimum, maximum, and standard times for events
  • The ability to define a new utilization reason (or mark a reason as severe) when an entity's reason duration has exceeded a maximum duration

These new options are only available within MES Web Portal. MES Client can still define utilization states and reasons as in previous versions.

MES Stateless API

  • The MES Stateless API will run on any CPU and is now supported in both 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
  • The MES Stateless API has exposed the Util_log class within the Util namespace.

MES Web API Not Supported as a Public SDK

The MES Web API is not supported as a public SDK.

Wonderware MES Quality

The following features have been added to Wonderware MES Quality:

  • New Production Unit Count sample plan frequency.
  • An option to define cause groups and causes, and to assign a cause to a sample point within the chart.
  • Multiple SPC Chart enhancements for greater control over the chart layout, and a right-click option for assigning cause and other properties to a sample point on the chart.
  • The Sample Recording Object can trigger an on-demand/ad-hoc sample.
  • When entering manual sample results, there is an option to require the user to re-enter their password to verify the person recording the data.
  • Archive and Restore is now available for MES Quality data through the sample table selection.

Wonderware MES Components No Longer Supported

The following Wonderware MES components are no longer supported with this release:

  • Wonderware MES Manager
  • Wonderware MES Report Designer

These components are no longer available for installation with the product. If an existing MES database is being upgraded to this release, these components and all associated content (system parameters, language strings, supply chain connector queries, and so on) will be removed from the MES database.

System Requirements - Wonderware MES 2014

This section describes the hardware, software, and operating system requirements to install the Wonderware MES 2014 software.

Hardware Requirements

The following are the recommended hardware requirements to install the Wonderware MES 2014.

Middleware or Database Server

  • Computer with dual core processor with 2 GHz or faster clock speed, or single core processor with 3 GHz or faster clock speed Dual core processor recommended for optimal performance.
  • 2 GB or more of RAM (1 GB minimum supported; may limit performance of some features).
  • 300-GB Disk with RAID support for data. The amount of disk space necessary depends on the frequency of data collected (number of work orders, operations, production quantities, etc.) and the amount of data kept online in the production database.

MES Web Application Server

  • Computer with 2 GHz or faster processor clock speed.
  • 1 GB RAM or higher.

All Systems (Client Applications)

  • 30 GB (minimum) hard drive
  • Super VGA (1024 x 768) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
  • CD-ROM or DVD drive
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse or compatible pointing device

Note: Depending on complexity and size of your database server, 30 GB or more of available disk space is recommended. Your database hard disk space should be enough to support the storage and performance requirements for your particular deployment.

Software Requirements

This section lists the Wonderware and other third-party software requirements to install the Wonderware MES 2014 software:

  • For all components except Wonderware MES Web Portal: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

Note: If Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is not installed on the computer, the Wonderware MES installation will attempt to automatically install it. On newer OS versions, an error will occur when the MES installation process attempts to install Microsoft .NET Framework. Therefore, you should install Microsoft .NET Framework before beginning the Wonderware MES installation.

  • If installing Wonderware MES Web Portal:
    • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5. If this version of the .NET Framework is not installed on the computer, the Wonderware MES installation automatically installs it.
    • Microsoft Internet Information Services 7.5.
  • The Entity Model Builder feature requires ArchestrA Integrated Development Environment (ArchestrA IDE).
  • The Wonderware Information Server Integration feature requires Wonderware Information Server. For more information, see Wonderware MES Reports in Wonderware Information Server Guide.

Web Browsers Supported for MES Web Portal Client

The MES Web Portal client has been validated with the following web browsers:

  • Chrome 36
  • Firefox 31
  • Internet Explorer 9, 10, 10 Native, and 11

It is expected that the MES Web Portal client will operate properly with subsequent releases of Chrome and Firefox browsers. However, if any MES Web Portal features do not function due to changes in a new release of Chrome or Firefox, customers will be notified by a Technical Alert when Schneider-Electric is made aware of the issue.

Note: When running MES Web Portal in some previous releases of Internet Explorer 11, there is a browser issue that can cause filter boxes on a page to not display correctly (for example, the filter box might be covered by a tile). To prevent this, make sure that a recent release of Internet Explorer 11 (more recent than 11.0.9600.17280) is installed.

Note: Demo videos in the MES Web Portal help will not run in Internet Explorer 9 or standard Firefox. To run demo videos in Firefox, you must have an MP4-capable video player such as Windows Media Player installed on both the server and client machines, or have a third-party MP4 plug-in installed in Firefox.

Note: Windows Server 2008 is supported for upgrade installations that are not using the new MES Web Portal.

Notes:

  1. SQL Server should be configured for TCP/IP for local and remote connections. If you use SQL Server, make sure it is installed using a case-insensitive collation.
  2. Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator and IIS 6.0 or later.
  3. MES Database using multiple languages requires AL32UTF8 Unicode character set installed on your server.
  4. The default installation of SQL Server 2008 Express does not permit external connections.  Remote Connections and SQL Server Browser services must be enabled for it to allow external connections. For more information, refer to the Wonderware MES Installation Guide or help.
  5. The MES Database Configuration Utility requires the Oracle Client installation to configure an Oracle database. SQLPlus must be available.
  6. Oracle is not supported with MES Web Portal. This is the final release supporting Oracle as an MES database.

Note: For proper database maintenance, it is recommended that you use an SQL Enterprise version due to the availability of online indexing capability.

Note: The Gage_Config table and all of the tables with names starting with “SPC_” except for the SPC_Rule have been removed from the database. Tables and related data rows for Manager and Report Designer have been removed as well.

Using Wonderware MES with Oracle on a Non-English Operating System

When you install Oracle on a supported non-English operating system:

    1. Install with the default CodePage appropriate to the language of the operating system. For example: CL8MSWIN1251 for Russian, WE8MSWIN1252 for French.
    2. Run Regedit.
    3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|ORACLE and look for the key under Oracle for the Oracle Home. Depending on the Oracle version, the wording of this may be different.
    4. Select the NLS_LANG option (LANGUAGE_TERRITORY.CHARACTERSET) associated with this Oracle Home key. Edit the CHARACTERSET to AL32UTF8 so that NLS_LANG option is RUSSIAN_RUSSIA.AL32UTF8.
    5. Install MES as normal.

If you are using a non-English Oracle environment and are saving changes in the MES Client (or any code using the MES API), the 'String was not recognized as a valid DateTime' error occurs.

To fix the issue:

    1. Run Regedit.
    2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|ORACLE and look for the key under Oracle for the Oracle Home key. Depending on the Oracle version, the wording of this may be different.
    3. Right-click the key, point to New and then click String Value.
    4. For the new string value, set the Name to: NLS_DATE_FORMAT
    5. Double-click the new string value and set the Value data to: yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss

Installing Wonderware MES with an Oracle 64-bit Database

Wonderware MES can connect to and use a 64-bit Oracle database server for better performance. MES clients and applications will need 32-bit Oracle client components in order to connect.

For the Oracle server, you need to install the 64-bit Oracle database server and 32-bit Oracle client. For the MES client, it will need the 32-bit Oracle client and Oracle Data Access Components to connect the database server.

The following outlines the procedure to set up MES for a 64-bit Oracle database server.

Installing the MES Database on the server

    1. Create the Oracle Database using the 64-bit Oracle Database installation setup. Additional databases can be set up using Oracle’s Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA).
    2. After installing the database, ensure that the listener is up and running for the database that is created.
    3. Start the Oracle Enterprise Manager for the database, so that you can ensure that the instance is up and running and that you can monitor and tune your database.
    4. Install the Oracle 32-bit client, with the Administrator options.
    5. Using the client’s Oracle Net Manager, create a network service name for database.
    6. Test the connection to Oracle database using tnsping and SQL*Plus.
    7. Install MES Database Setup utility.
    8. Create the MES user, tablespace, and schema using the Database Setup utility by entering the net service name and the schema owner and password. The tablespaces, schema, and schema objects will be created by the utility. You will need the password for the SYSTEM user to create the tablespace and schema.

Connecting MES Client to the MES 64-bit Oracle database

    1. If necessary, install the 32-bit Oracle client and create a network service name for the database.
    2. Install the Oracle Database Access Components (ODAC).
    3. Install the MES Client and other components.
    4. Configure the Oracle database using Wonderware MES Database Connection Editor.
      • The Data Source refers to the Oracle network service name.
      • The User Id refers to the schema owner.
      • The Database Password refers to the schema owner password.

      Test the connection and ensure that you can connect successfully. Save the settings.

    5. Restart the MES Middleware and the MES service.
    6. Open MES Client and connect.

Support for Virtual Environments and High Availability

The Wonderware MES 2014 software can be run in virtual environments to support High Availability for Live Migration and Failover. Implementing High Availability can be performed using VMware technology or Microsoft Hyper-V technology.

Support for Non-English Versions of Operating Systems

The Wonderware MES 2014 software runs on the following non-English operating systems:

The corresponding language versions of Microsoft SQL server are used, where applicable.

ArchestrA® Workflow 2012 R2 SP1 and Wonderware Skelta BPM 2014 are compatible and can coexist with Wonderware MES 2014. Note that the ArchestrA Workflow MES Connector v1.6.2 and Skelta BPM 2014 Connector for MES do not work with Wonderware MES 2014. An update to the integration components will be posted on the Wonderware Software Download site (https://wdn.wonderware.com/sites/WDN/Pages/Downloads/Software.aspx) as soon as they are available.

Wonderware System Platform 2014 R2 is anticipated to be compatible and to coexist with MES 2014; please refer to the Wonderware System Platform 2014 R2 Readme for confirmation.

Licensing - Wonderware MES 2014

The 2007 Microsoft Office Fluent User Interface is subject to protection under U.S. and international intellectual property laws and is used by Wonderware MES under license from Microsoft.

Quinn-Curtis SPC Chart Control:

The use of the QCSPCChart and QCChart2D WPF and .NET controls require the purchase of a Wonderware Advanced Dev Studio or Wonderware MES Quality license.

Upgrading from a Previous Version to Wonderware MES 2014

The upgrade from Factelligence 3.4, Factelligence 3.5 (all patches), Wonderware MES 4.0 (all service packs and patches), and 4.5 (including P1) is supported. To upgrade from a version earlier than Factelligence 3.4, you need to first uninstall the previous version and then install the new version.

The MES Database Configuration utility delivered with this project supports migration of databases from version 3.1 and later. To migrate from versions earlier than 3.1, you must first update the database to version 3.1. Custom modifications to any version of the Factelligence database may not be supported by the utility and may prevent migration.

Resolved Issues

This section describes important resolved issues in the Wonderware MES 2014, listed by their Change Request number:

L00114385 If the user starts or completes a job externally from the OCO --- Script / .Net / Operator / MES Client --- the OCO does not know about the change.
L00115448 When attempting to use the property GRIDCONTROL1 in Visual Basic, the error “’gridControl1' is ambiguous” is returned. The property name was changed to GRIDCONTROL
L00117592 Cannot restore database due to date time error.
L00117953 Cannot restore database due to date time error.
L00118867 The MES Client BOM Spec screen does not update the correct spec value when another user updates the values.
L00120244 The connection string in the Database Connection Editor should be editable.
L00120590 The AddConsDirect() method does not support indistinguishable lots.
L00120591 When using TransferAndUpdateInv() with indistinguishable lot, if the Item_inv records have a lot_no, then you need to specify a lot number in the call when you shouldn't need to.

L00123143 Executing a Ship (from Supervisor to Inventory) sometimes fails when sublots are used as the stored procedure is not passing the sublot (uses NULL instead).
L00123145 Issue with the KPI control: An unhandled exception is thrown when a graphic containing the OEE/KPI .NET user control is loaded while the current entity of the client session is not configured to capture OEE.
L00123282 MES Service memory and handles grow constantly (MESService.exe).

Known Issues - Wonderware MES 2014

This section describes important known issues in the Wonderware MES 2014. The following table lists the known open change requests, listed by their change request number.

L00120213 After you uninstall MES 4.5/5.0, the ‘ArchestrA License Server’ Services cannot be started.
L00120336 French laptop keyboard cannot enter numbers from the top of the keyboard into property pane of MES Client.
L00123684 Report data can be generated but the downtime Analysis top reasons graph labels only every second reason.
L00125451 During the creation of a work order from a process, incorrect or no specs get associated to the order if the item being produced has been changed (delete initial and add a new one).
L00129287

When logging utilization events from the MES Web Portal and the UCO, events will have the wrong duration.

Workaround: The MES Web Portal should not be used to log new events for an entity that has event logging from a UCO.

L00129641 SPCChartControl ignores the preset Lower Control Limit (LCL) set in the MES Client and calculates its own LCL from Upper Control Limit (UCL) and Center Line (CL).
L00129775

After clicking the Exit button to cancel the Wonderware MES installation (for example, to install prerequisite software before attempting to install Wonderware MES), and attempting to run the installation again, the installation process hangs.

Workaround: During the first installation attempt, a file is created in the following AppData subfolder of the user who initiated the installation process:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\Wonderware MES\4.6.0.0

In this folder there is a subfolder with the install build number. In the build number folder there is a file called InstallUserData.txt; delete this file. When you restart the installation process, the installation should proceed past the Wonderware MES component selection dialog box.

L00129907 A process that can produce multiple items incorrectly creates the Job_Bom tables for the operations when creating the work order from a process.
L00129962 When doing a galaxy dump of a UCO with multiple reason group levels, then doing a galaxy load from the galaxy dump file, you get an error and cannot open the instance.
L00130657 The Auto Reset of the PEM instance is not working when specifying the input source; the PEM instance will be triggered again and again.
L00130966 Memory leak when using the UCO causing engine to fail [related to HF L00130241].
L00131059 A job BOM is incorrectly created for item with two BOM versions and nested BOMs.
L00131790 A job BOM is incorrectly created for an item with two BOM versions and nested BOMs.
L00131983 Trying to start a job on more than one machine causes an error inserting into the prod_rate_history table.
L00132419 When trying to add a new item with Web Access, a violation of the PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_item' occurs.
L00132549 Global Specification imported by CSV through SCC fails for rows having Polish special characters in the description.
L00132740 When SRO is configured to view multiple samples, the most recent sample is updated when pulled but the second sample does not get updated in the object but does get updated in the database.
L00132902 If multiple items to be produced in a process have a common sub-item to be produced in BOM #1 and BOM #2, then every time that common sub-item is marked as "Set as Produced Item” on BOM #1 for an operation, the same sub-item will be marked as produced on that operation for BOM #2.
L00132930 The fg_sublot_no field of item_cons table is NULL after a database migration from 3.5 to 4.5.
L00133037 TPM stat table issue - The table updates every half hour instead of hour when in a time zone with a half-hour offset (e.g., India).
L00133069 A deadlock can occur with API call aaMES.Quality.aaSample.GetByKey: sp_S_Sample is doing a select statement on the sample table, but without "WITH (NOLOCK)".
L00133092 The middleware does a call to get the count of licenses, which can cause a LOCK under transaction control.
L00133275 There is an issue when upgrading from 3.5 Hot Fix 2079 or 3.5 Patch 01 to MES 4.0 or 4.0 SP1. See TechNote 802 for the workaround.
L00133800 The date/time control on the entity configuration Attributes tab in MES Web Portal is enabled only after the third click in Internet Explorer 11 when used for the first time.
L00134069 On Windows 2012 and 2012 R2, adding the MES Web Portal feature through the Windows Add/Remove function after the product has been installed will result in an error from the Web Deploy Tool during the MES install. Workaround: To add/modify MES Web Portal, please use Setup.exe from the MES install media.
